The Georgetown Hoyas try to up their winning-streak to six when they host the Elon Phoenix Tuesday.
Georgetown is 6-2 and on a five-game tear after dropping two of its first three to begin the season. The Hoyas overcame a rough shooting night in their last outing Dec. 7 to pull out a narrow 61-55 victory over Colgate. Georgetown hit 21 of 56 from the field and just 1 of 15 from distance, but still topped the Raiders, who finished shooting 16 of 50 and connected on 5 of 24 from downtown. Junior C Joshua Smith scored a team-high 14 points on 4 of 6 shooting, while senior F Nate Lubbick added 10 points and 7 boards. The Hoyas kept Colgate from getting on the scoreboard for the first nine minutes of the game, holding the nation’s top-ranked three-point shooting team to 0 for its first 8 attempts from beyond the arc. Georgetown was up 10-0 when the Raiders scored their first basket at the 10:58 mark of the first half. The Hoyas led by as many as 14 in the second half, but saw their lead trimmed to 43-38 with under five minutes left and ultimately to 56-52 with 39 seconds left, but Colgate could only watch as Georgetown sealed the victory from the foul line. Through eight games, the Hoyas are averaging 75.5 ppg on 48 percent shooting and sophomore G D’Vauntes Smith Rivera leads with 16.6 ppg.

Elon, meanwhile, comes in with a record of 5-5 and off of a 80-63 loss to then #21 Colorado Friday, in which the Phoenix rallied from 15 down at the half to close to within 8 before the Buffaloes seized control for good with about eight minutes left. Elon shot 37 percent from the field and 40 percent from distance. Senior G Sebastian Koch scored a game-high 27 points on 9 of 16 from the floor and connected on 64 percent from beyond the arc, while sophomore G Tanner Samson added 12 points with 4 three-pointers. On the season, the Phoenix are averaging 78.9 ppg on 49 percent shooting and senior F Lucas Troutman leads the team with 16 ppg on 56 percent from the field.
The Hoyas are currently a 14.5 point home favorite in this one and Elon has gotten blownout by all the notables they’ve faced, namely Drexel, Charlotte and Colorado. Georgetown hasn’t exactly been an elite team yet this season, but they have beaten the teams they should have (and maybe one they shouldn’t have in #10 VCU), losing only to then #19 Oregon and Nebraska. Look for the Hoyas to cover.
