The 5-6 Detroit Titans visit the 4-2 Akron Zips for non-conference, mid-major college hoops action Wednesday night at 7PM.
Detroit fell to 5-6 after a solid second half rally fell short at NC State 82-79. After falling behind early, the Titans scored 51 second half points and missed out on key opportunities to take the lead late in the game. Juwan Howard Jr. was once again impressive -- the forward had 24 points and 7 rebounds and was perfect from the free throw line. The Titans were 27-59 from the floor for the game and won the rebounding battle narrowly 36-31. Evan Bruinsma added 16 and 6 and moved into second on the team in ppg average (12.5). With the loss, Detroit is now 2-4 on the road this season.

Akron finds themselves getting into the meat of their schedule after only playing 6 games through the first month of the season. The Zips sit at 4-2 and notched a 74-64 win over Oral Roberts in their most recent contest. The Zips strong play at home continued as they controlled the game throughout -- the Zips were paced by Quincy Digg’s 19, 7 and 3 line off the bench. Demetrius Treadwell controlled the paint with 18 and 11. Akron dominated the Oral Roberts front and backcourt on the defensive end as well as they managed 20 turnovers and held Oral Roberts to just 1 three-pointer on the night.
Some trends to consider -- Detroit is 3-10-1 against the spread in their last 14 Wednesday games and Akron is 5-1 against the spread in their last 6 versus the Horizon conference.
This game should be an up and down affair as both these teams like to push it. I expect a physical battle and like the front court of Demetrius Treadwell and Reggie McAdams to be the difference for the Akron. This one should be close throughout but the Akron home court advantage will seal things up for the late cover and win for the Zips.
