The Cincinnati Bearcats and the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders face off on Saturday in college basketball action.
The Cincinnati Bearcats appear to be taking a step back this year but at the same time don’t expect them to roll over and quit anytime soon as we saw them come up big last time out beating Pitt. Cincinnati has played the 176th ranked schedule but after back-to-back losses to Xavier and New Mexico they appeared to be reeling. Sean Kilpatrick is averaging 18.3 points to lead UC in scoring. Justin Jackson is averaging 9.8 points and 6.7 rebounds, Titus Rubles is averaging 9.1 points anf 5.6 rebounds, and Troy Caupain is averaging 6.9 points. Cincinnati is averaging 70.5 points and they are shooting 42.9 percent from the floor and defensively they are allowing 56.5 points and their opponents shoot 39.4 percent. Cincinnati begins AAC play on January 1st.

The Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders are 8-3 on the season and they are coming off of a 50-point win against Tennessee Temple. MTSU has had two disappointing losses recently falling to Ole Miss and Belmont. Shawn Jones is averaging 14.3 points and 7.9 rebounds to lead the Blue Raiders. Neiko Hunteris averaging 13.3 points and 4.8 rebounds, Kerry Hammonds II is averaging 11.5 points, and Trantell Knight is averaging 8.6 points. Middle Tennessee State is averaging 77.5 points and they are shooting 47.7 percent while defensively they are allowing 66.5 points and their opponents are shooting 40 percent. MTSU’s schedule gets slightly easier when they start Conference USA play.
Cincinnati is 4-10 against the spread in their last 14 non-conference games, 3-9-1 against the spread against Conference USA, and 1-7 against the spread following a game that they didn’t cover the spread. Middle Tennessee State is 3-11 against the spread in their last 14 road games, 1-5 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 0-6 against the spread after scoring more than 90 points their previous game.
Cincinnati played well against Pittsburgh but this just isn’t a great Bearcats team and I like MTSU with the points.
