The Rice Owls collide with the Houston Cougars in a first round match up of the Dickies Shootout.
Rice has been in a season's worth of tight games already with two decided in overtime and five others decided by no more then three points. The Owls received a reprieve from the nail biters with a 69-56 decision over sub division Northwood despite both teams struggling to find the shooting touch. Both connected in the 30%-31% range with the main difference being the Owls 19-9 advantage at the charity stripe. Keith Washington and Austin Ramljak led the Owls scoring with 14 points apiece with Sean Obi adding eleven points and and eleven rebounds while Andrew Drone contributed another ten points.

Houston really needs a shot of momentum right now with the team floundering about with no apparent direction. The Cougars have dropped five of seven following a 79-76 overtime loss to Louisiana-Lafayette which was especially painful with UH leading by eight at the half. The Cougars might have let one get away with 53% from the floor squandered by sloppy ball handling that saw 20 turnovers committed. TaShawn Thomas led the scoring 27 points on 10-14 from the field with six pulls followed by a 16 point effort from Danrad Knowles while Brandon Morris came through with 13 points and five yanks.
