Morehead State notched their 8th win of the season this past week with a dominant offensive outing versus South Dakota. The Eagles jumped out of the gate quickly and didn’t look back scoring 120 points on the back of forward Drew Kelly’s amazing 40 point outing. Kelly shot it 14-23 from the field and added 12 boards -- Morehead State shot the ball 55% from the floor for the game and had six players notch double figures in points. Guard Kareem Storey was rock solid facilitating the office with 16 assists to go along with his 6 points. Through 13 games, the Eagles rank 58th in PPG (79.1), 39th in rebounds per game (40.0) and 61st in assists per game (15.2) in all of college basketball.
Tennessee enters this contest losers of two straight after falling to #11 Wichita State and losing narrowly to NC State this past week 65-58. The Vols were very lethargic out of the gates in this contest, scoring just 20 points in the entire first half and falling behind by 17 at the break. The Vols tried to rally in the 2nd half behind some solid play from Jordan McRae -- McRae was just 6-22 from the floor, but found ways to hit shots down the stretch when the Vols made a push. Tennessee was 3-24 from the three point line and just 20-68 from the floor for the game. The lack of a presence at the point guard spot continues to be a troubling issue for the Vols as they finished with just 5 assists for the entire game.
Some trends to consider -- Morehead State is 6-2 against the spread in their last 8 versus the SEC and Tennessee is 1-3-1 against the spread in their last 5 Monday contests.
Tennessee has been very inconsistent on the offensive end early on this season and I don’t expect this contest to be any different. The Eagles are the better offensive team and have shown the ability to compete against high major teams in the past few years. While I expect the Vols to win at home, I also expect another strong game from Drew Kelly and like the Eagles to pull the narrow cover, as Tennessee gets the win..
