The George Mason Patriots and the Saint Mary's Gaels take the floor in the 7th place game of the Diamond Head Classic.
When this tournament began I saw George Mason as the weak link because this isn't the elite team we've known from the CAA. This thought came to fruition as the Patriots fell to a loaded Iowa State in round one and then couldn't find the shooting touch in a 58-54 loss to Oregon State. The Patriots 39% marksmanship was competitive with the Beavers 44% because of 13 more looks at the basket but a 17-6 deficit at the foul line was their undoing. Bryon Allen paced the George Mason offense with 15 points with Patrick Holloway adding 12 followed by an eight point, six board effort from Jalen Jenkins.

I don't know what to say about Saint Mary's except I certainly didn't expect to see them in the 7th place game. Just too much talent for that to happen but losses to South Carolina and Hawaii left us looking for answers. The problem in a 76-74 loss to the Warriors was defense and turnovers with the Gaels connecting at 53% from the field but UH responding with 50% marksmanship while forcing 16 SMC giveaways. Brad Waldo led four double digit scorers with 17 points and nine rebounds with James Walker III tossing in 16 points and snagging seven boards. Beau Levesque netted 14 points while Kerry Carter and Stephen Holt contributed 12 and nine points with Holt handing out eight assists.
I really don't like this game because Saint Mary's hasn't played well and George Mason isn't a strong team. I'll take the points but honestly don't know if it's enough...
