The Tennessee Volunteers and the Virginia Cavaliers face off on Monday in an ACC vs. SEC college basketball matchup.
The Tennessee Volunteers won last time out to end a two game losing skid but as usual then Vols have played a rough schedule. Tennessee has played the 63rd ranked schedule and they are 5-1 at home this season. Jordan McCrae is averaging 18.7 points as the Volunteers leading scorer. Jarnell Stokes is averaging 13.6 points and 9.6 rebounds, Jeronne Maymon is averaging 11.1 points and 8.5 rebounds, and Josh Richardson is averaging 7.6 points. Tennessee is averaging 73.8 points and they are shooting 44 percent while defensively they are allowing 64.9 points and their opponents are shooting 44.3 percent. Tennessee opens SEC play on January 8th against LSU.

The Virginia Cavaliers have won their last two games but they are just 0-1 on the road this season. UVA has played the 60th ranked schedule in the nation and 3-3 against teams with a RPI better than 100. Joe Harris leads the Cavs averaging 11.4 points per game. Malcolm Brigdon is averaging 10.2 points and 5.3 rebounds, Justin Anderson is averaging 9.2 points and 4.6 rebounds, and Anthony Gill is averaging 9.0 points. Virginia is averaging 65.8 points and they are shooting 45.7 percent from the floor while defensively they are allowing 54.2 points and their opponents shoot 37 percent. Virginia opens their ACC schedule on January 4th against Florida State.
Tennessee is 2-5-1 against the spread against the SEC, 9-4 against the spread in their last 13 home games, and 12-5 against the spread in their last 17 games following a game that they covered he point spread. Virginia is 5-13-1 against the spread in their last 19 road games, 4-1 against the spread against the SEC, and 1-5 against the spread against a team with a winning record.
This should be a good one but the Vols might be the more athletic team here and throw in the home court and I give them the edge.
