New Big East teams collide on New Year’s eve as the 8-5 Marquette Golden Eagles visit the 10-2 Creighton Bluejays at 10PM on Fox Sports One.
Marquette rebounded from their loss to New Mexico in Las Vegas to dominate Samford this past week 71-48. Marquette swarmed the Bulldogs on the perimeter, holding them to 1-12 from deep and also forced 17 turnovers for the game. Marquette got an amazing game from their bench -- four reserves reached double figures while all starters were in single digits for the Golden Eagles. JaJuan Johnson had 14 and Deonte Burton added 13 for the Golden Eagles strong bench attack. Marquette’s 48% shooting was fueled by their bench as the starters managed to hit just 1 three and finished 7-21 from the field. If Marquette can get more consistent play from their starters in conference play, this team has the depth to peak at the right time as March approaches.

Creighton is 10-2 on the season and sitting just outside the top 25. The Bluejays have rolled back after back to back losses earlier this year to whip off five straight and look very good in doing so. The Bluejays rank 3rd in the country in assists (18 per game) and they racked up 24 of them in a clinic of a win over Chicago State 90-58 this past week. Doug McDermott was right on key with 24 points and 6 boards and guards Austin Chapman and Grant Gibbs each added 5 assists a piece. Creighton was 27-48 from the floor in this game and a rock solid 20-22 at the line -- the Bluejays are one of the best free throw shooting teams in the nation thus far. In addition to their stellar guard play, Creighton owned a +13 edge on the boards and forced 10 turnovers.
Some trends to consider -- Marquette is 4-1 against the spread in their last 5 Tuesday games and Creighton is 4-0 against the spread in their last 4 home games.
Marquette should provide Creighton with their toughest defensive test of the season so far but the Golden Eagles have been unable to find consistent offense game to game and I expect that to be the case again. Doug McDermott is too talented to let the Golden Eagles completely remove him from the game and the Creighton offense is far too efficient to be rattled for 40 minutes. I expect a close game with a Creighton run late to pull away at home for the cover.
