The Purdue Boilermakers and the Ohio State Buckeyes tip off their Big Ten college basketball schedules on Tuesday in a New Year’s Eve battle.

The Purdue Boilermakers are of to a solid 10-3 start and are a perfect 8-0 thus far this season. Purdue gets their second crack at a team ranked in the top 25 losing earlier by 10 to Oklahoma State. Terone Johnson leads the Boilermakers averaging 14 points per game. Ronnie Johnson is averaging 10.8 points, Bryson Scott is averaging 9.7 points, and A.J. Hammons is averaging 8.0 points and 6.8 rebounds. Purdue is averaging 78.4 points and they are shooting 45.4 percent while defensively they are allowing 70 points and their opponents are shooting 40.5 percent. Purdue has played the 231st ranked schedule that will get a lot tougher as they continue Big 10 play. The Boilermakers do a lot of things well but don’t do anything great.

Purdue Boilermakers vs. Ohio State Buckeyes Pick, Odds, Prediction 12/31/13

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

The Ohio State Buckeyes are unbeaten thus far and as has been the case in most recent years they enter Big Ten play ranked in the top 25. OSU has played away from home just twice, one road game at Marquette and a neutral site win over Notre Dame. Lenzelle Smith Jr. leads the Buckeyes averaging 13.4 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. LaQuinton Ross is averaging 12.9 points and 5.8 rebounds, Amir Williams is averaging 9.8 points and 7.4 rebounds, and Aaron Craft is averaging 9.5 points, 4.6 assists, and 2.3 steals per game. Ohio State is averaging 74.8 points and they are shooting 47.2 percent while defensively they are allowing 54 points and their opponents are shooting 36.4 percent. Ohio State has played the 142nd ranked schedule in the country but it gets tough in a hurry with a road tilt at Michigan State next Tuesday.

Purdue is 7-3 against the spread against a team with a winning record, 0-5 against the spread following a game that they covered the point spread, and 3-7 against the spread in their last 10 home games against a team with a winning road record. Ohio State is 5-0 against the spread in their last five games against the Big Ten, 4-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 10-21-1 against the spread in their last 32 road games following three or more home games. The favorite has covered the point spread in four of the last five meetings of these two.

My free pick in this game will be on the total so check back when the totals are posted. My much stronger pick is on who will cover the spread and I will be posting that pick in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
