The 8th ranked Villanova Wildcats visit the Garden for a showdown with St. John’s Saturday at 1PM on Fox Sports 1.
Villanova easily moved to 14-1 this past week with an 83-67 win at Seton Hall. The Wildcats were never challenged in this one, building a six point halftime lead before pulling away with an early second half run. The Wildcats featured four players in double figures, led by Darrun Hilliard’s 19 points. Ryan Arcidiacano added 14 and knocked down three threes and Jayvaughn Pinkston had another solid outing with 17 points. The Wildcats continue to win games despite the scoring drought of swingman James Bell, who was in single digits once again. Villanova knocked down 12 of their 23 three point attempts and forced the Seton Hall offense into 16 turnovers - many leading to transition points during their pull away run early in the second half.
St. John’s fell to 9-5 on the year with a deflating loss to the Georgetown Hoyas in DC this past weekend. The Red Storm had virtually no shot in this contest after a flat shooting first half found them down 26 with 20 minutes to play. The second half was much better offensively but the damage was done as Georgetown cruised to the 77-60 win. The Red Storm’s continued struggles to get offensive assistance were evident as reserve Max Hooper led all scorers with 13 points. St. John’s was also 50% at the free throw line for the game and continues to kill themselves seemingly every contest with their inability to convert at the line.
The Red Storm’s struggles are clearly too much to overcome at this stage of the season and Villanova has the advantage across the board in this one. The Wildcats have been strong on the road and I expect this contest to be no different as Nova gets a strong outing from Bell and Pinkston and coasts to victory in the big apple with the cover and road win.
