The Old Dominion Monarchs visit the Florida International Panthers Thursday at 7PM at U.S. Century Bank Arena.
The Old Dominion Monarchs won their inaugural game in Conference USA this past weekend with an 81-70 win over conference leader East Carolina 81-70. The Monarchs were dominant in the second half with their half court defense leading the way as they broke open a tie at the break for the win. The win marked two in a row for the Monarchs. Keenan Palmore led all scorers with 23 points for ODU and did so on an impressive 11-13 shooting. Aaron Bacote added 18, 4 boards and 4 assists. ODU took down a +7 edge on the boards and were 14-18 at the line (77%). The win marked two in a row for the Monarchs.

Florida International are .500 in conference and 9-8 overall after a lopsided 85-51 loss at Louisiana Tech. The game was the Panthers worst of the season -- FIU struggled to 35% shooting, just 2-9 from beyond the arc and 59% from the charity stripe. In addition to their shooting woes, the Panthers were led by Tymell Murphy’s 13 points, but only featured one other player in double figures. FIU also committed 24 fouls and had 18 turnovers to just 5 team assists.
Old Dominion and FIU have had eerily similar seasons thus far and while I expect the Panthers to return home hungry after a lopsided loss, the Monarchs have been more competitive and I think they have veteran leadership to be a sleeper team in conference USA. Look for another big game scoring-wise from Keenan Palmore as the Monarchs make it 2-0 with the cover and late win on the road over FIU.
