St. John’s remains at home and happily steps outside of conference play as they host Dartmouth Saturday.
Dartmouth is 7-7 on the season and lost their home opener this past week to a solid Harvard team that is picked by many to win the conference. Dartmouth hung tough for about 20 minutes, trailing by just 3 at the half before the Crimson turned it up and ran away with the 61-45 victory. Dartmouth’s offensive struggles continued as Gabes Maldunas was the only player in double figures with 19 and the Big Green managed just 45 points despite 14 players getting minutes in the game. Dartmouth hit just two threes for the game and were doomed by 18 turnovers for the contest.
St. John’s will certainly be fatigued heading into this one as they Red Storm capped off two losses this week with a double OT loss at home to Providence Thursday night 84-83. St.John’s led with 21 seconds left when guard Max Hooper was forced into a jump ball situation which gave the final possession back to Providence -- resulting in a Bryce Cotton game winning basket. Jakarr Sampson led the way with 16 points and 8 boards and Phil Greene IV added 15 off the bench and was key in keeping the Johnnies in the game late. The loss moves St. John’s to 0-5 in conference play and a tie with Butler at the bottom of the Big East standings.
Despite the struggles of St. John’s recently, the Red Storm should be able to easily get the win over Dartmouth and hopefully get their confidence back up as they move back into Big East play for the duration of the season. Look for another big game for Jakarr Sampson and the St. John’s front line to dominate the Big Green as the Johnnies get the cover at home.
