A share of first place is on the line as the #20 Creighton Bluejays visit the #6 Villanova Wildcats Monday at 7PM on Fox Sports 1.
Fresh off their first loss in conference play, the Bluejays saw their double digit game winning streak come to an end Saturday as the Bluejays fell on the road to Providence 81-68. The Bluejays played their most inefficient game of the season on offense, totaling just 9 team assists -- 10 below their nation leading 19.1 average. Creighton got a sub par game from Doug McDermott, who was battling the flu, with 21 and 7 but 0-2 from deep. On the defensive end, the Bluejays were unable to slow down Providence’s attack as the Friars scored 80+ points, shot it 50% from the field and got 23 points from Bryce Cotton, who stole the show in front of a ton of NBA scouts. Fortunately for Creighton, they can get right back on track and slide into a share for first with a win at Nova Monday.

Villanova continues to roll and this weekend the victim was the DePaul Blue Demons. Riding high off two straight wins, the Blue Demons never had a shot in this one as Villanova came out strong and led by double digits for most of the first half and got an early run in the second half to put the game safely out of reach. James Bell had his best game in weeks with 17 and 8 boards and Daniel Ochefu scored 14 and 6 boards and was a key enforcer down low with 3 blocks. The Wildcats knocked down 9 three’s, shot 55% from the field and was a very solid 17-23 from the line. In addition to their hot shooting, the Wildcats had 21 team assists to just 5 turnovers -- a ratio that will make the Wildcats very tough to beat at home.
This is far and away the biggest conference game of the young big east season - Doug McDermott rarely puts together back to back unspectacular games and I expect him to be back in top form in this one. Look for the Bluejays to keep this one close throughout and for Villanova’s size and depth to be the difference with their physical defense getting them the win, with Creighton covering at the Pavillion Monday night.
