It could be an interesting battle when the 11-8 Western Carolina Catamounts take their act on the road to play the 7-10 Wofford Terriers. It’s only the second road game of 2014 for Western Carolina.
Both teams are a lot better than their records indicate, as they’ve played hard non-conference schedules that included Oregon, Georgia, VCU, Minnesota and St. Louis. But Western Carolina is 4-0 in conference play for a reason. The same goes for Wofford sitting with a 2-3 conference record, which includes losing two straight to Chattanooga.

The Catamounts can simply put the ball in the hoop, as they’re averaging 73.6 points per game and have one of the best players in the Southern Conference in senior guard Trey Sumler. He’s averaging 18.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. Thanks to him and a feisty defense, Western Carolina is also averaging 13 assists and eight steals per contest.
Wofford doesn’t have any players as explosive as Sumler. It’s a team that only scores 65 points per game and shoots 69.2 percent from the free throw line. Because of those offensive struggles, Wofford has lost three of its last four and is 0-4 against the spread at home this season.
Western Carolina has had a heavy road schedule all season long, which should prepare the team for this conference game against a struggling team. There aren’t any intriguing trends out there that should make you lean one way or the other. Well, the favorite is 10-3 against the spread in the last 13 meetings between these two teams.
Yeah, let’s go with that. Pick the chalk and expect the better team to pull away late.
