A matchup between VCU and Dayton could end up being the most competitive college basketball game on Wednesday. They both have run into a few bumps along the way this season, but they’re both solid basketball teams for the most part and more than capable of going toe-to-toe with just about anybody in the country.
After a slow start, the Rams have begun to figure things out a bit, winning six of their last seven games and playing that classic VCU defense that is holding teams to less than 65 points. The defense continues to play at a high level and is the reason for the 13 steals per game. The offense has also picked up a bit, as the Rams have scored more than 80 points in three of the last six games and are shooting an OK 42 percent on the year.

The Flyers have lost two of their last three and are just happy to be back home after a two-game road trip. They’re 8-2 on their home floor and 3-3 against the spread. They continue to shoot a high percentage from the field but can struggle against athletic teams that are capable of turning it up defensively. Dayton turned the ball over 13 times against Baylor, 15 times against Saint Louis and 14 times against Richmond, which resulted in all losses.
Both teams have their faults but when in doubt, you have to go with the team that is capable of getting consistent stops defensively. Give me VCU in the minor upset on the road. All of the trends say Dayton, but sometimes you just have to go with your gut. I trust VCU’s defense more than any other side of the floor this game has to offer.
The Rams will get their second big road win of the season.
