The Elon Phoenix climb back into conference play with a road trip to conference leader Chattanooga Thursday at 7PM.
Elon has been hovering around .500 all year and after a thrilling conference road win at Davidson, the Phoenix made their way back into the losing column with a loss to 16th ranked UMass 84-74. The Minutemen were just too strong and too solid on the defensive end for the Phoenix to keep up. Elon still managed 74 points, three below their season average of 77 -- which ranks 51st in the nation. Elon got 19 points from Lucas Troutman up front and guard Sebastian Koch added 18 and 6 boards on 6-10 shooting from the field. The Phoenix were crushed on the glass 45-32 and committed a costly 23 fouls that UMass took full advantage of (74% at the line). Despite the out of conference loss, the Phoenix sit in 4th at 3-1 in conference play.

The Chattanooga Mocs are 12-8 on the year and while their non-conference play has been pretty underwhelming, the Mocs sit alone in first in the Southern conference at 6-0. The Mocs are averaging 78 points per game -- good for 45th nationally and most recently, Chattanooga dispatched Wofford 71-57 behind two balanced halves of offense. Five players scored in double figures for the Mocs and reserve Ronrico White was instant offense with 16 off the bench. The Mocs only had 4 team assists but managed to force 15 turnovers and excelled in transition all game long. While their wins have been narrow, the Mocs continue to show again and again that they can turn it on when it counts and wins are on the line.
This game has all the makings of a shootout. I would not be surprised to see this one finish in the 80’s and I gotta go with the undefeated home team. With Mason on the glass and the blocks and Ronrico White’s strong offensive play, I like the Mocs to make it 7-0 in conference play and take down the cover as well.
