Storyline: The Iona Gaels eye three straight victories when they square off with the St. Peter’s Peacocks Sunday.
The Breakdown: Iona improved to 7-2 in the MAAC with its 95-73 thrashing of Quinnipiac Friday. The Gaels now sit in a three-way tie for first place in the conference with Manhattan and Canisius. Iona rode a combined 63 points from three starters, including a game-high 23 from senior G Sean Armand. Sophomore G A.J. English and senior G Tre Bowman added 20 points apiece. The Gaels shot 43.9 percent from the field and connected on 8 of 27 from distance, while holding the Bobcats to 24 of 64 from the floor and 6 of 21 from outside the arc. Iona also came away with a 45-37 advantage on the boards and forced 13 turnovers. Through 18 games, the Gaels rank 13th in the nation with 83.8 ppg on 48.1 percent shooting. Armand leads the team in scoring with 18.8 ppg, followed by English at 17.8 ppg.

Meanwhile, St. Peter’s sits in 8th place in the MAAC with a conference record of 3-6. The Peacocks have dropped their last two, including a 64-47 loss to Siena Thursday. St. Peter’s shot a woeful 37.0 percent from the field and hit just 2 of 12 from downtown. The Saints didn’t shoot much better, connecting on 39.3 percent from the floor and just 3 of 16 from distance, but the Peacocks were outrebounded 48-29 and committed 11 turnovers. Junior G Jamel Fields had a team-high 9 points off the bench and junior F Marvin Dominique added 7 points and 4 rebounds. On the season, St. Peter’s is averaging 65.0 ppg on 39.8 percent shooting. Dominique leads the team in scoring with 17.5 ppg, followed by junior G Desi Washington at 12.9 ppg.
Rick’s Pick: Iona is currently a six-point favorite in this matchup and after their destruction of Quinnipiac, this team looks every bit as good as their 13th-ranked offense might indicate. The Gaels had three starters go for at least 20 the last time out, which in the MAAC should mean trouble for most. Look for Iona to cover.
