Kent State will take its two-game losing streak on the road and play a Toledo team that has won four straight. The Rockets are the best team the Mid-American Conference has to offer, while the Golden Flashes have seen better days.
Toledo continues to play a high quality of basketball offensively, shooting 48.4 percent from the field and scoring under 70 points just once all season. It even went toe-to-toe with Kansas, losing that matchup on the road by just 10 points. In the last five games, its averaging 76.2 points and shooting a solid 74.2 percent from the charity stripe. The defense could be a little better, but regardless, not many teams are capable of keeping up the Rockets offensively.

Kent State is one of these teams that certainly doesn’t fall in that category. It’s shooting just 38.9 percent in its last five games and only 28.9 percent from downtown. This has a lot to do with the recent struggles of junior guard Derek Johnson, who has scored just 14 combined points in the last two games. He and Kris Brewer are the go-to guys on the team, and they just haven’t been getting it done as of late.
Defensively, you have to be concerned about the 47.4 percent Toledo allows teams to shoot. That could be the break Kent State needs to find its offensive rhythm. Kent State has remained a decent defensive team all season, holding teams to just 43.4 percent shooting from the field.
While Toledo is clearly the better team and probably should win this game fairly easily, I think the projected number is just a couple points too high. The Golden Flashes defense should keep them in this game, and they are 5-1 against the spread on the road this season. Toledo is just 1-3-1 against the spread on their home floor, and the road team has covered in each of the last four meetings between these two teams.
Kent State and the points, please.
