The Norfolk State Spartans go on the road to face the rival Savannah State Tigers Monday.
Norfolk State is challenging for the top spot in the MEAC but took a step back in a 73-61 loss at South Carolina State. That defeat knocked the Spartans out of a four way tie for first in to fourth as both ends of the floor struggled to get things together. The offense had the worse of it with just 36.8% from the field, 15 turnovers and a 14-25 effort at the line leaving valuable points on the floor. Brandon Goode led the scoring with 19 points and ten rebounds with Malcolm Hawkins and Rashid Gaston combining for 21 points with Gaston posting five pulls.

Savannah State has the numbers that tell us they must control the scoreboard with an average of around 62 points but much of the scoring woes can be attributed to their non conference schedule. The Tigers have been a force in the MEAC where they jumped out to a 5-0 record before suffering their first loss to Hampton by an 80-71 count which dropped them in to a three way tie for first. Both teams sank shots in the 40% range but the decisive number was the Pirates 28-11 edge at the foul line. Jeremiah Hill led four DD scorers with 15 points with Khiry White tossing in eleven followed by Jyles Smith and Alante Fenner with ten points apiece.
Not much to go on here but from what I see Norfolk State competed better against some of the bigger names on their schedule and Savannah State has done better in the conference. Just going with the home team that has been defending well...
