The schedule doesn’t get any easier for St. Bonaventure with Massachusetts coming to town Wednesday night. The Minutemen beat the Bonnies earlier this year with a 73-68 score, and have won three of the last five meetings.
St. Bonaventure has lost four of its last five games, really putting a damper on such a terrific start to the regular season. Other than simply playing tough competition, there isn’t any real reason for the losing streak, however, the good news is that all four losses were by single digits. Not only was the UMass game close, but a road game against Saint Louis was decided by a lousy six points. The Bonnies are playing solid on both sides of the ball and have improved to 6-1 against the spread on their home court.

UMass bounced back from that Richmond loss with a blowout victory over Fordham. It was able to shoot 51.6 percent from the field and knock down 13 threes, all while holding the Rams to 30.5 percent shooting. This is a scary basketball team when it’s firing on all cylinders, and an 8-2 against the spread record is very intriguing for potential backers.
Don’t get fooled by the records in this game. St. Bonaventure can play basketball. It’s had a couple of tough breaks, but we’re talking about a team that’s shooting 46 percent from the field on the season and holding teams to just 68.4 points per game defensively. It’s hungry for a victory and will do what it can to satisfy the home fans.
However, in a pick em, I can’t pick against UMass. It will be a well fought game throughout, but the Minutemen are an above-average tournament team that will find a way.
