The Norfolk State Spartans head down south to Miami to play the Hurricanes on Saturday.

Norfolk State improved to 12-9, 6-2 MEAC after beating Savannah State 56-49 on Monday night. The Spartans shot 42.6% from the field and only 28.6% from three-point range. Malcolm Hawkins scored 16 points as Norfolk State used a 17-2 run late in the second half to knock off Savannah State out of first place in the MEAC. On the season, Hawkins leads the Spartans with 16.7 points per game. Pendarvis Williams is averaging 15.1 points per game and 5 rebounds. Norfolk State is averaging 75.9 points per game while shooting an impressive 48.2% from the field. The Spartans are an average rebounding team and do a great job distributing the basketball on offense, averaging 14.3 assists per game. After losing four straight games in late December, Norfolk State has won four out of their last six games. The Spartans are 3-5 on the road this season.

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Hurricanes dropped to 10-10, 2-6 ACC after losing at Maryland 74-71 on Wednesday night. Miami shot 50% from the field and 42.9% from three-point range, while shooting a mediocre 64.3% from the charity stripe. Rion Brown scored a team-high 25 points, while Donnavan Kirk added 9 points and a team-high 9 rebounds. On the year, Brown averages a team-high 13.4 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Miami is averaging only 61 points per game while shooting an awful 41.7% from the field. The Hurricanes are not a great rebounding squad and they don’t distribute the ball well on the offensive end of the floor. The Hurricanes have not played well since starting conference competition and they have lost three straight overall. Miami will head back home for three straight games; the Hurricanes have lost six games at home, including their last two games against Duke and Syracuse.

Miami will be hungry to get a win even if it has to come against a non-conference opponent at this point. However, Norfolk State is not a team to take lightly. If the Spartans can knock down shots from the outside against the Miami zone defense, I think they have a chance to keep things close on Saturday. I’m going to take the points with Norfolk State and I wouldn’t be surprised if they came away with the win.
