The Seton Hall Pirates visit the Xavier Musketeers for Saturday afternoon Big East hoops action at noon on CBS Sports Network.
The Pirates roll into Cinnci sitting at 12-9 and 3-5 in conference play. The Pirates continue to alternate wins and losses and most recently fell to lowly Butler 64-57. Butler hit some key late free throws to ice this one after the two teams exchanged baskets for the entire contests with nobody’s lead extending back 6 points. Fuquan Edwin led the Pirates with 20 points and 6 steals but his backcourt mate Sterling Gibbs struggled to just 7 points on 3-9 shooting but added 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Both teams shot the ball similarly and the turnovers, rebounds and team assists stats were almost identical. The key was Butler’s ability to get to the line and convert late in the contest.

Xavier enters this one a solid 15-5 on the season and sits at 5-2 in the big east. The Musketeers have had a week off to stew over a road loss to Providence last Saturday 81-72. Providence expanded on a 5 point halftime lead and pulled away in this one in front of the home crowd to keep their win streak alive. Justin Martin led the Musketeers with 19 and 7 and Semaj Christon added 18 but the Musketeers struggled from deep, finishing just 3-18 from behind the arc. In addition, the Xavier front court was completely stymied and accounted for just 11 points while allowing Providence to rack up 10 blocks down low. The loss ends a two game win streak for Xavier. The Musketeers must not get caught looking ahead to their matchup with Villanova next week.
Both of these teams have shown the ability to beat anyone on any given day and while Seton Hall has been competitive on the road, the Musketeers are very tough at home and with a week to prepare, I find it hard to bet against Xavier getting the win here. I like a big game from Matt Stainbrook as the Musketeers defense and rebounding are the difference in the 10 point home win and cover.
