A Missouri Valley Conference matchup between Southern Illinois and Drake likely isn’t going to be a fun watch. These two teams met a week ago and Drake won 57-54 despite turning the ball over 15 times.
If you couldn’t tell from that final score, both of these teams struggle to put the ball in the hope, so you may want to wait for the total to drop if you’re considering capping this game. Southern Illinois averages just 67.8 points per game on the season and Drake is averaging just 64.4 points in its last five contests.
The Salukis have lost four of their last seven games and are 9-12 against the spread which includes a 4-7 ATS record on the road. They only make 67.5 percent of their free throws, less than 30 percent of their threes and average 13 turnovers per game. Simply put: It’s a team that you shouldn’t put money on because the end result likely isn’t going to be pretty.
Drake isn’t much better with losses in seven of its last nine games. Yes, the Bulldogs do shoot better from all over the floor and have a true baller in Richard Carter, but they have run into a brick wall as of late. In their last five games, they’re allowing teams to shoot 47.1 percent from the field and giving up more than seven points than what the offense is averaging. Back-to-back losses to Illinois State and a recent loss to Loyola (IL) are concerning.
With the way both teams are playing, you may feel the need to take the points with Southern Illinois. However, it’s a team that is 1-4 against the spread in its last five games and 3-12-1 against the spread in its last 16 meetings against Drake.
If you must, take the home team and the chalk.
