Nevada and Utah State will meet for the second time this season on Wednesday night. The Wolf Pack won the first meeting in early January 62-54.
Since then, Nevada has won three of its last five games with three of those contests going into overtime. During those games the Wolf Pack are shooting 42.7 percent from the field and averaging 73.6 points. Defensively, they’re allowing teams to shoot 39.4 percent and score 69.4 points. Needless to say, the defense has drastically improved over the last week or so. On the season they’re allowing 73.7 points per game on 43.8 percent shooting.

Utah State has experienced the tough part of the schedule and has now lost five straight games. During those five losses it is scoring only 61.4 points and allowing 73.2 points. It is shooting close to 40 percent from downtown, which is close to the season average of 41.5 percent, but that defense has got to improve if the Aggies are going to get back in the win column. In Saturday’s game against Wyoming, Preston Medlin was the only starter who scored more than five points.
I’m not sure how the spread is so high with the way both teams have played as of late. Granted, the Aggies have played some tough competition during their losing streak, but Nevada has just held two decent scoring teams in Air Force and Colorado State under 70 points in back-to-back games.
The Wolf Pack are also 8-2 against the spread on the road and 4-0 ATS in their last four games overall. Meanwhile, Utah State is only 10-8-1 ATS this season and 1-4 ATS in its last five games.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Nevada found a way to win this game straight up. But as always, I won’t shy away from the points.
