The Santa Clara Broncos will put their six-game losing streak on the line when they take on the BYU Cougars. BYU is riding a two-game winning streak and is an impressive 10-1 straight up at home.
These two teams played one another a couple of weeks ago at the Leavey Center and BYU won the game 91-81.

Since then, the Cougars are 2-2 with losses to Portland and Gonzaga. In their last five games they’re shooting an incredible 49 percent from the field and knocking down a solid 40.5 percent of three point attempts. The problem has been the defense. It hasn’t been good all year, allowing 79.2 points per game, but in their last five contests opponents are shooting 48.1 percent. It’s the reason they’ve lost four games this year even when scoring more than 80 points.
Santa Clara is no scoring machine like BYU. In fact, it only averages 70.6 points per game on the season and is shooting just 42.7 percent. In their last five games, the Broncos are shooting 29.3 percent from downtown, 40.9 percent from the field and scoring 65.8 points.
It’s really a question if the Broncos can find their offensive rhythm against a BYU squad that plays zero defense. Well, they did in their last matchup, as Santa Clara shot 44.3 percent and knocked down nine three-point attempts.
BYU is only 4-4 against the spread at home, while Santa Clara is 4-4-1 ATS on the road. The road team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings between these two teams and the Broncos are 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 games against teams with a winning percentage above 60 percent.
The Cougars just don’t play enough defense to blow teams out, which is why I’ll gladly take the points in this one.
