Saint Mary’s will play its third straight road game Thursday night when it pays a visit to Loyola Marymount. The Gaels have lost their first two games in this four-game road trip, while the Lions have lost eight of their last nine.
The Gaels have lost back-to-back games against San Diego and BYU. In the San Diego game they shot a god awful 25 percent from the field and made one three pointer out of 14 attempts. In the game against BYU, the Cougars simply outplayed them, shooting 49.1 percent from the field and grabbing 38 boards. The Gaels have been one of the best shooting teams in the country at 45.9 percent, but they’re shooting just 41 percent in their last five games. They are just 2-4 straight up on the road this season.
The Lions continue to get beat up by pretty much everybody they run into. They’ve allowed four straight 80-plus point performances, which really wipes out great shooting at 44.5 percent on the season. In their last five games, they’re allowing teams to shoot an insane 47.2 percent from the field and 39.6 percent from beyond the arc. It’s a defensive nightmare and may just be what Saint Mary’s needs to turn things around. The Lions are 5-2 SU on their home court.
I’m actually surprised at the low line. Sure, both teams are struggling and Saint Mary’s hasn’t proven it can win on the road, but Loyola Marymount plays no defense. None. Zero. These two teams met earlier in the season and the Gaels walked all over the Lions with a score of 89-61.
What’s really changed since then?
Saint Mary’s is 10-10 against the spread and Loyola Marymount is 8-14. The Gaels have also won the last three meetings SU against the Lions by a wide margin.
Take the small chalk to make yourself some money heading into Friday.
