Southern Miss Golden Eagles vs. Marshall Thundering Herd - 2/7/14Randy's Free College Basketball Pick Against the Spread
The Marshall Thundering Herd may be in over their heads when they play the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.
The Marshall Thundering Herd will kick off a three-game road trip that begins in Southern Miss on Friday night. Marshall has lost six of its last eight games and the Golden Eagles have won their last five games.
The Thundering Herd are an up-tempo team that hopes the shots never stop falling. They shoot 44.7 percent from the field and average 77 points per game. The problem is they allow 76 points per game and for the opponent to make 45.7 percent of its shots. If the shots don’t fall they lose, which has been the case lately with them shooting only 43.8 percent from the field and 30.1 percent from beyond the arc.
The Golden Eagles have been one of the most consistent teams in the C-USA and has actually covered in their last five games. During that time they’re shooting 45.7 percent from the field and holding opponents to 40.4 percent shooting. Defensively, they’re holding teams to just 62.2 points per game on the season, which would explain the 19-3 record and 9-0 record on their home court.
With the way both teams have been playing and Marshall’s 3-6 ATS record on the road, it may feel like Southern Miss should cover with ease. But not when Marshall is getting 18.5 points. Regardless of the talent level, that’s a lot of points to lay, especially against a team that’s capable of getting hot offensively.
Not to mention it is Marshall that has won three of the last four meetings straight up.
Are the Thundering Herd lousy? Yes. Can they keep it within 18 points? I like their chances.
Give me the road underdog and the truckload of points.
