Storyline: Pepperdine looks for three in a row when they host St. Mary’s at Firestone Fieldhouse Saturday.
The Breakdown: The Waves improved to 7-5 for 5th place in the WCC with their second straight win over Pacific Saturday 80-69. Pepperdine shot a stellar 51.0 percent from the floor and 53.8 percent from outside the arc to the Tigers’ 38.6 percent from the field and 43.5 percent from distance. Pepperdine also finished with a 36-33 edge on the boards and hit 23 of 30 from the free throw line. Sophomore F Stacy Davis had a game-high 24 points off the bench, including 11 of 11 from the foul line, senior F Brendan Lane had 18 points, 8 rebounds and 5 blocks, and junior G Malcolm Brooks added 11 points. On the season, the Waves are averaging 72.4 ppg on 46.5 percent shooting. Davis leads the team in scoring with 15.0 ppg, followed by Lane at 13.9 ppg.
St. Mary’s, meanwhile, snapped a two-game skid with a 77-58 rout of Loyola Marymount Thursday, improving to 7-4 for 4th place in the conference. The Gaels shot an outstanding 58.5 percent from the floor and connected on 6 of 13 from outside the arc to the Lions’ 43.1 percent from the field and 2 of 10 from distance. Junior G Kerry Carter scored a game-high 20 points, including 4 of 7 from downtown, senior F Beau Levesque had 17 points and 14 rebounds and 5 assists, and senior G Stephen Holt added 17 points on 8 of 10 shooting. Through 24 games, St. Mary’s is averaging 74.7 ppg on 46.4 percent shooting. Junior F Brad Waldow leads the team with 16.9 ppg, followed by Holt at 13.7 ppg.
Rick’s Pick: The line in this one is currently set at -4.5 for St. Mary’s. The Gaels topped Pepperdine by 4 last time around and this is a home game for the Waves so not sure about the line. These two average about the same amount of points per outing and shoot about as accurately as one another. That said, Pepperdine gets the lean.
