The Xavier Musketeers visit the Butler Bulldogs in a battle of Big East newcomers Tuesday night at 9PM on Fox Sports 1.
Xavier finally got back in a groove this past weekend as the Musketeers rode their team defense and home court edge to get back in the conference win column with a solid 59-53 win over visiting Providence. Semaj Christon and Matt Stainbrook led the way with 25 combined points and Stainbrook added 9 boards as well as he overwhelmed the Friars down low. The Musketeers now rank 50th in the country in boards -- mainly thanks to Stainbrook’s consistent efforts down low. The win moves Xavier to 6-4 and keeps them in the conference race.

Butler fell to 2-9 this past week in big east play with a loss at Georgetown 71-63. Butler continues to struggle from the point guard spot -- the Bulldogs rank 283rd in college basketball with just 11 assists per game. Kellen Dunham and Khyle Marshall are averaging over 32 combined but are supported by a bare cupboard that rarely shows up contest to contest. To make matters worse, the Bulldogs rank 212th in field goal percentage at 43%. With the loss to Georgetown, the Bulldogs remained tied with DePaul for dead last in the big east.
Xavier struggled for a few weeks but has shown some life of late and simply has more potent weapons than Butler. I expect a huge game from Matt Stainbrook down low and the Musketeers to get 20+ from Semaj Christon as Xavier gains sole possession of 3rd place in the conference with win number 7 and the cover at Butler.
