Storyline: Iona looks to keep surging after taking sole possession of first place in the MAAC when they host St. Peter’s Wednesday.
The Breakdown: The Gaels improved to 12-2 and sit atop the conference after their seventh consecutive victory Sunday in a 101-91 handling of Canisius. Sophomore G A. J. English lifted Iona to the win with a career-high 32 points, including 4 of 6 from outside the arc. Junior F David Laury had 23 points and 9 rebounds off the bench and sophomore G Isaiah Williams added 18 points. The Gaels shot 47.0 percent from the floor and 46.4 percent from three-point range to the Golden Griffins’ 47.1 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from distance. Meanwhile, St. Peter’s is in 8th place in the conference at 5-9 and comes in off its second consecutive victory 61-50 over Monmouth Sunday. The Peacocks stifled the Hawks to 18 of 61 from the floor and just 1 of 14 from outside the arc while connecting on 21 of 51 from the field and 7 of 22 from distance. St. Peter’s conceded a 44-35 advantage on the boards, but forced 11 turnovers and converted on 12 of 18 from the foul line. Junior F Marvin Dominique scored a game-high 20 points to go with 6 rebounds and 4 blocks and junior G Desi Washington added 17 points. Through 23 games, the Peacocks are averaging 63.6 ppg on 39.7 percent shooting. Dominique leads the team with 17.3 ppg, followed by Washington at 13.3 ppg.
Rick’s Pick: The line in this one is set at a rather large -14.5 for Iona. The Gaels slipped by St. Peter’s by just 8 points a couple weeks ago and despite their recent dominance of the MAAC, that’s just too big a number. Look for a closer game than the spread.
