The Michigan State Spartans and the Northwestern Wildcats face off on Thursday in East Lansing in Big Ten college basketball.
The Michigan State Spartans have lost three of their last five games but are still ranked ninth n the nation. Michigan State is 10-2 at home this season and 9-2 in the Big Ten and they are in second place in the conference standings. Gary Harris leads the Spartans averaging 17.6 points per game. Adreian Payne is averaging 16.4 points and 7.2 rebounds, Keith Appling is averaging 15 points, and Denzel Valentine is averaging 7.7 points and 6.3 rebounds. Michigan State has been solid this season and their recent struggles just seem to be the normal byproduct of a Big 10 schedule.

The Northwestern Wildcats are coming off of a loss but they have won four of their last six games. Northwestern is 5-6 in the Big Ten, 4-6 away from home, and 0-4 against teams ranked in the top 25. Drew Crawford leads the Wildcats averaging 16.1 points and 8.1 rebounds. JerShon Cobb is averaging 11.5 points, Tre Demps is averaging 10.5 points, and Alex Olah is averaging 8.0 points and 5.1 rebounds. Northwestern is averaging 60.8 points and they are shooting 39.8 percent while defensively they are allowing 62.9 points and their opponents are shooting 40.3 percent. Northwestern is playing their best basketball of the season.
Michigan State is 5-1 against the spread following a loss, 6-2 against the spread against the Big Ten, and 11-4 against the spread in their last 15 games. Northwestern is 4-1 against the spread in their last five games against a team with a winning percentage better than .600, 6-0 against the spread at Michigan State, and 0-6 against the spread in their last six Thursday games. The road team has covered the point spread in 16 of the last 21 meetings of these two.
