The Breakdown: The 49ers sit in a tie with Hawaii for second place in the Big West, dropping to 6-4 after a buzzer-beating 65-64 loss to UC Santa Barbara Thursday. Long Beach State connected on 43.1 percent from the floor and 38.9 percent from outside the arc to the Gauchos 45.5 percent from the field and 26.7 from distance. The 49ers conceded a 32-29 advantage on the boards committed 15 turnovers. Junior G Tyler Lamb scored a team-high 13 points and dished out 4 assists, junior G Mike Caffey had 11 points and 5 rebounds, and freshman G Branford Jones added 10 points off the bench. The Mustangs were edged from the field 36.4 percent to 35.2 percent, but topped the Matadors from outside the arc 31.3 percent to 18.2 percent. Cal Poly also finished with a slim 39-37 advantage on the boards and hit 19 of 28 from the free throw line. Senior F Chris Eversley scored a team-high 17 points, senior G Kyle Odister added 14 points off the bench, and sophomore F Joel Awich added 7 points and 7 rebounds. Through 23 games, the Mustangs are averaging 63.6 ppg on 42.0 percent shooting. Eversley leads the team with 13.3 ppg, followed by sophomore G Dave Nwaba at 11.7 ppg.
