The Penn State Nittany Lions and the Iowa Hawkeyes face off on Saturday in Happy Valley in Big Ten college basketball.
It’s been a battle this season for the Penn State Nittany Lions as they are a game above .500 overall and in 11th place in the Big Ten standings. Penn State is 8-6 at home this season and 4-8 in Big 10 play. D.J. Newbill leads the Nittany Lions in scoring averaging 17.2 points and 5.3 rebounds. Tim Frazier is averaging 16.1 points and 6.0 assists, Brandon Taylor is averaging 9.8 points, and Ross Travis is averaging 9.3 points. Penn State is averaging 73.7 points and they are shooting 43.9 percent while defensively they are allowing 71.9 points an their opponents are shooting 41.3 percent. Penn State has won four of their last six games.

The Iowa Hawkeyes have gone 3-3 in their last six games but they are the 16th ranked team in the nation. Iowa is 6-4 away from home and 7-4 in Big Ten play that is good enough for third place in the conference standings. Roy Devyn Marble leads the Hawkeyes in scoring averaging 16.5 points per game. Aaron White is averaging 13.2 points and 6.5 rebounds, Jarrod Uthoff is averaging 8.4 points, and Melsahn Basabe is averaging 7.8 points. Iowa is averaging 83.7 points and they are shooting 47.3 percent while defensively they are allowing 67.1 points and their opponents are shooting 38.7 percent. Iowa has come up short against the better teams in the conference.
Penn State is 4-9 against the spread against the Big Ten, 4-10 against the spread in their last 14 games overall, and 1-7 against the spread in their last eight home games. Iowa is 6-1 against the spread in their last seven road games, 20-8 against the spread against the Big Ten, and 22-10 against the spread against a team with a winning record. The home team has covered the point spread in six of the last seven meetings of these two.
This one looks like Iowa has a decided edge and while I expect Penn State to put up a fight it’s just a lean to Iowa.
