The DePaul Blue Demons visit the Dunkin Donuts Center to battle the Providence Friars Saturday afternoon at 2PM on Fox Sports One.
DePaul’s mighty struggles continued this past week as the Villanova Wildcats invaded their arena for an easy 87-62 win. The Blue Demons are now without fairly consistent contributor and veteran Cleveland Melvin and it showed as they struggled on the offensive side of the ball all game long. DePaul’s porous D allowed Villanova to score 48 first half points and shoot the ball 55% from the floor and 57% from deep. Brandon Young led all scorers with 27 points but once again had no supporting cast -- especially with the absence of Melvin. DePaul had just 8 total assists to 15 turnovers and committed 18 team fouls that Villanova converted into a cool 18-20 at the line. The loss drops DePaul to 2-10 in conference play.

The once surging Providence Friars now find themselves in a tough spot after loss number three in a row this past week to Georgetown 83-71. In a matter of just a week and a half, the Friars have fallen from sole possession of third place in the conference to the middle of the pack at 6-6. Against Georgetown, Bryce Cotton was once again solid with 31 points and 4 assists on 8-14 shooting. The Providence bench managed to just score 4 total points and that was ultimately the difference as the Hoyas got 20 from their reserves. The Friars continue to struggle from the field shooting and their national rank of 307th (41.3% per game) is likely the worst in the entire conference.
Providence is very much in need of a winnable game at home and fortunately for them the DePaul Blue Demons are just that. The wheels have nearly come off for DePaul as they are just going through the motions at this point. I like another 25+ point showing for Bryce Cotton as the Friars get back above .500 with a much needed cover and win at home.
