The best Friday college basketball game will be when the VCU Rams take on the Massachusetts Minutemen.
The Rams have been in a little bit of a funk, losing two of their last three games. Both came on the road and were against St. Joseph’s and Saint Louis. Still, despite shooting 41.6 percent and allowing opponents to shoot 44.4 percent, they’re still averaging 73 points and allowing just 66 points in their last five games. On the road they average 71.9 points and give up 70.6 points. They are 12-12 ATS overall and 7-6 ATS on the road.
The Minutemen have split their last six games, but are coming off an impressive road win over George Washington. In the 67-61 win, they shot 49 percent from the field and had 16 assists on 25 baskets. While they’re shooting 48.4 percent from the field in their last five games, they’re only averaging 73.4 points, while the defense is allowing 72 points on 41.3 percent shooting. The reason for the points being so close are the turnovers, as the Minutemen have turned the ball over 15 times twice in their last three games. At home they average 81.1 points and allow 71 points. They are 15-10 ATS overall and 5-6 ATS at home.
This should be a fun game to watch, as I believe both teams could make a decent run in the tournament. However, UMass turns the ball over 13.7 times per game, while VCU forces 18.3 turnovers on average. The Minutemen are extremely careless with the ball and will have even more issues against that havoc defense.
The Rams are 4-1 ATS in their last five games and 5-1 ATS in their last six matchups against teams with a winning SU record. It’s also important to remember that they just went toe-to-toe with the Saint Louis Billikens, the best team in the Atlantic 10.
I’ll gladly take VCU and the point.
