Meanwhile, Portland fell to 7-8 for 6th place in the conference after a 61-59 loss at San Diego Thursday. The Pilots topped the Toreros from the field 42.6 percent to 41.7 percent, but hit just 6 of 19 from outside the arc to San Diego’s 6 of 14. Portland matched the Toreros on the boards 33-33 and converted 7 of 9 from the free throw line. Junior C Thomas van der Mars scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, junior G Bobby Sharp had 16 points, including 3 of 6 from distance and sophomore G Bryce Pressley added 11 points and 6 boards. On the season, the Pilots are averaging 76.5 ppg on 45.7 percent shooting. Junior G Kevin Bailey leads the team with 16.5 ppg, followed by van der Mars at 12.9 ppg.
Rick’s Pick: The line in this one is currently set at -11.5 for BYU. Portland topped BYU 114-110 at home a month ago and the double-digit spread isn’t as big as it seems, considering the Cougars rank 3rd in the country at 85 points per outing, almost 10 more than the Pilots. Look for a closer game than the spread, though, as Portland is one of those teams that can wow you out of the blue, i.e., the upset over Gonzaga.
