The Xavier Musketeers visit the garden for a big showdown with the St. John’s Red Storm Tuesday at 7PM on Fox Sports One.
Xavier continues on their road trip after being dominated in DC this past Saturday by Georgetown 74-52. The Musketeers shot themselves in the foot in this one with almost no production off the bench and minimal output from their starters. Semaj Christon had 18 and Stainbrook and Martin combined for 25 but were just 8-18 from the floor combined. Xavier had just 8 team assists versus 11 turnovers and the Musketeers forced zero steals and had just 3 blocks for the whole game. The loss dropped the Musketeers to 8-6 in conference play and opens the door for the Red Storm to pull even in the standings Tuesday night.
St. John’s put together another very strong performance this past weekend but unfortunately they fell just short this go around with a 57-54 loss at Villanova. The Red Storm were within 3-5 points almost the entire game but failed to come up big on some key possessions down the stretch. Jakarr Sampson had 12 and 10 to lead the Red Storm and star freshman Rysheed Jordan continued his strong play with 13 points and 6 boards. The Red Storm shot the ball poorly from the field with 32% shooting overall and failed to stop the Villanova aerial attack. The loss drops St. John’s to 8-7 in conference but the Red Storm have a favorable schedule down the line if they can get past Xavier Saturday.
These two teams face a must win contest here with the 3rd seed in the Big East tournament up for grabs. The Red Storm looked like the much better team on the road this past weekend and I expect that to be the case here at home versus Xavier. Big games from Harrison and Sampson will help the Red Storm get the win and cover at home as they take control of third place with just a few games to play.
