Storyline: St. Mary’s eyes third place in the WCC and a second consecutive victory when they welcome Portland to McKeon Pavilion Thursday.
The Breakdown: The Gaels improved to 10-6 for 4th place in the conference behind a 76-54 trouncing of Santa Clara Saturday that saw a career-high 35 points on 14 of 17 shooting from senior G Stephen Holt. Junior F Brad Waldow had 12 points and 9 rebounds and senior G James Walker added 9 points and 6 boards. The Gaels shot a scorching 59.2 percent from the floor and 64.3 percent from outside the arc to the Bronco’s 40.0 percent from the field and 21.4 percent from distance. St. Mary’s also dominated the boards 36-18 and converted 9 of 10 from the free throw line. Through 29 games, the Gaels are averaging 73.3 ppg on 46.1 percent shooting. Waldow leads the team with 16.0 ppg, followed by Holt at 14.8 ppg.

Meanwhile, Portland dropped to 7-9 for 6th place in the WCC after suffering an 89-72 loss at BYU Saturday. The Pilots were topped from the floor 55.9 percent to 39.4 percent and from outside the arc 50.0 percent to 42.9 percent. Portland finished with a 42-35 rebounding advantage and converted 11 of 19 from the free throw line to the Cougars’ 13 of 22. Senior F Ryan Nicholas scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed 5 rebounds, junior G Bobby Sharp had 16 points, including 4 of 9 from downtown, and sophomore G Bryce Pressley added 10 points and 6 boards. On the season, the Pilots are averaging 76.3 ppg on 45.5 percent shooting. Junior G Kevin Bailey leads the team with 16.5 ppg, followed by Nicholas at 13.0 ppg.
