Storyline: St. Mary’s looks to end its season with a third consecutive victory when it hosts Gonzaga Saturday.
The Breakdown: The Gaels improved to 11-6 for 4th place in the WCC behind a 70-61 victory over Portland Thursday. Senior G Stephen Holt scored a game-high 26 points, including 4 of 8 from downtown, junior F Brad Waldow had 14 points and 9 rebounds, and junior G Kerry Carter added 12 points on 4 of 8 from downtown. The Gaels connected on 20 of 45 from the floor and 11 of 29 from outside the arc to the Pilots’ 25 of 52 from the floor and 7 of 9 from distance. St. Mary’s also converted 19 of 25 from the free throw line. On the season, the Gaels are averaging 73.2 ppg on 46.1 percent shooting. Waldow leads the team in scoring with 15.9 ppg, followed by Holt at 15.1 ppg.

Meanwhile, Gonzaga clinched the conference title with its 70-53 spanking of Pacific Thursday. Junior G Kevin Pangos scored a game-high 18 points on 6 of 14 shooting, Senior F Drew Barham had 17 points off the bench, including 4 of 6 from downtown, and sophomore C Przemek Karnowski added 9 points and 9 rebounds. The Bulldogs outshot the Tigers from the floor 42.0 percent to 30.9 percent and from outside the arc 38.9 percent to 31.6 percent and also converted 21 of 32 from the free throw line. Through 30 games, the Zaga are averaging 77.3 ppg on 49.5 percent shooting. Pangos leads the team in scoring with 14.8 ppg, followed by senior C Sam Dower with 14.6 ppg.
Rick’s Pick: The line in this one is currently set at – 1.5 for St. Mary’s. Gonzaga trounced the Gaels by 22 points in early January and although the Gaels have a shot at second place here, the Zags are still trying to put the San Diego loss way behind them so they’ll be out to show everyone they’re still the class of the class of the WCC.
