The Marquette Golden Eagles take to the road to face the 8th ranked Villanova Wildcats Sunday at 2PM on CBS Sports network.
Marquette has been quietly taking aim at the third place mark in conference play in the past few weeks as they have battled to a 9-6 mark in conference play after winning 5 of their last 6 games. The Golden Eagles narrowly edged Georgetown Thursday night behind the solid play of big man Davante Gardner. Gardner led all scorers with 26 points and 7 boards as the Golden Eagles held on for the 75-73 win. Jake Thomas scored 22 points on 7-12 field goals as well and Marquette racked up 20 team assists and forced Georgetown into 10 key turnovers -- some coming late as they clinged to the lead. Marquette now faces a tough road test at Nova and Providence before closing their season at home versus St. John’s.

Villanova sits at #8 overall and won another conference game this week as they handled Butler with ease 67-48. The Wildcats used even scoring and a deep bench to overwhelm a struggling Butler roster. Fourteen Villanova players saw action and James Bell and Darrun Hillard led the way with 11 points a piece. Villanova held a +7 advantage on the glass and turned the ball over just 7 times on the night. Villanova now ranks in the top 30 nationally in points per game (79.4) and assists per game (15.8). The win moves Nova to 13-2 in conference play.
This game has the potential to be low scoring and a bit of a defensive battle as these two teams have traditionally played slug it out affairs. The home court and depth are the keys here and Villanova has both on their side. Look for a big contest from James Bell in this one and for the Wildcat defense to hone in on Gardner and try to make the rest of the Golden Eagles’ roster beat them -- Villanova with the cover and win at home.
