The Colgate Raiders host the Navy Midshipmen in a Patriot League playoff opener at Cotterell Court Monday.
Navy heads in to the conference tournament having finished last overall with most of the blame falling on the shoulders of an offense that struggled to score. The Midshipmen were outscored 65-61 and have dropped 11-13 with no more then 66 points scored in any of those defeats while the defense gave up 74 points or less in 12 of those losses. The offense did take a hit with the suspension of Tilman Dunbar who averaged 12 points and five assists in ten games which is not replaceable for a team that is fortunate to see 60 points. If the Middies are to be heard from the combo of Worth Smith and Brandon Venturini (combined 23 ppg) need to score more and find help from the supporting cast.

Colgate ended the year at 6-12 in the Patriot which earned them a three way tie for seventh and a spot in the conference play in game. Although the numbers tell us this offense averaged 70 points that wasn't the case for much of the conference slate until the Raiders closed the year with a 3-0 run with around an 80 point average. The name of the game for Colgate is potential with four double digit scorers led by Austin Tillotson (13.5 ppg/4.5 rpg) who leads the team with 60% marksmanship. Opposing defenses will likely key on him so the rest of the offense has to make shots to prevent that from happening.
These teams split the season series so that makes the spread a scary one. Navy is 1-8 on the road and Colgate is hot at the right time so I will grudgingly back them...
