The Marquette Golden Eagles battle the Providence Friars with conference tourney seeding on the line Tuesday at 9PM on Fox Sports One.
Marquette fell to 9-7 in the conference and missed out on an opportunity for a signature win with a 73-56 loss at Villanova on Sunday evening. The Golden Eagles had a quick turnaround after an emotional win against Georgetown just three days earlier and they never got into the swing of things offensively. Not one of Marquette’s starters reached double figures and little used reserve Deonte Burton led the way off the bench with 13 points. Marquette struggled from the three point line (4-16) and finished the game just 64% at the line -- well below their usually solid average. To make things worse, Villanova forced Marquette into 15 turnovers. Marquette needs this game and likely a win in their final contest of the season to really feel good about their bubble hopes.

Providence also sits at 9-7 in conference play and got to that mark with a win over rival Seton Hall 74-69 this past week. The Friars led in this one throughout but made things interesting down the stretch as Seton Hall got it to three before falling short. Despite only four bench points, the Friars offense was once again fueled by the play of their starters as four of five registered double figures with Bryce Cotton’s 24 points leading the way. Kadeem Batts was also dominant on the wing as he scored 14 points while hauling in 11 boards. The Friars won the battle on the boards and had just 7 turnovers for the game.
These two teams are neck in neck in the standings and are fairly equal on paper. The difference is that Providence has a number of consistent scorers while the Golden Eagles never know who is going to show up from game to game. I like the veteran starting 5 of Providence to be the difference here with Cotton going for 20+ again as the Friars get to 10 conference wins with the cover and win at home.
