The battle for the cellar takes place Thursday night as the Butler Bulldogs visit the DePaul Blue Demons at 9PM on Fox Sports One.
Butler enters this contest rested up after a week off. Prior to their lengthy break, the Bulldogs were crushed by Villanova 67-48. Butler fell behind by 15 points early and trailed by 14 at the half and never came close to making up ground against the stronger, more talented Wildcats. Kellen Dunham and Khyle Marshall led the way with a combined 22 points but that was nowhere near enough. Butler continues to get no consistent support and is pretty much throwing darts with their roster at this point as they went 13 deep in this one and got minimal results. Butler shot it 30% from the field and just 21% from deep. The offseason can’t come quick enough for Butler but perhaps they will try and find some solace in avoiding a last place finish.

DePaul sits a half game ahead of Butler at 3-14 in conference play and host the Bulldogs in their season finale. DePaul has played better of late and that was once again the case this past weekend as they fell short at surging St. John’s 72-64. DePaul was in the game throughout and mainly can attribute that to the play of Brandon Young who scored 23 in this one and has been a routine 20+ point scorer in recent games. The Blue Demons had 14 team assists but were dominated on the glass 43-26 -- ultimately the difference in the contest. DePaul also struggled at the line -- in addition to taking just 7 free throws for the contest, the Blue Demons finished just 2-7 from the stripe.
These two teams have been sagging at the bottom of the standings almost all season long and while on paper they are very similar, DePaul features a more athletic team and I do not see anyone on Butler able to slow down Brandon Young the way he has played of late. Look for this one to be close throughout and Young to break the 20 point mark once again as the home team gets the win and cover in front of the DePaul faithful on senior night.
