The Line: Old Dominion Monarchs -5.5 -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
The East Carolina Pirates and Old Dominion Monarchs will play one last regular season game when they meet Thursday night. These teams met back on January 11, and the Monarchs won 81-70.
The Pirates have split their last six games and have really had trouble scoring the basketball as of late. They usually average 74.1 points on the season, but have scored 68 or less points in five of their last eight games. Now they’ll go on the road for the last time, a place where they’re only 3-8 SU. On the road, they average 69 points on 42.7 percent shooting and are allowing 74.4 points on 46.2 percent shooting. They are 9-11-3 ATS overall and 5-5-3 ATS on the road.

Ever since February 6, the Monarchs have has a consistent pattern of win/loss/win/loss. During this frustrating stretch, they’re averaging 58.2 points on 42.6 percent shooting and are allowing 67 points on 43.2 percent shooting. The Monarchs are 1-10 SU when allowing at least 70 points. This is a team that relies purely on defense and wants to keep the score as low as possible. At home, the Monarchs average 66.1 points and give up 63.8 points. They are 13-14 ATS overall and 5-7 ATS at home.
This game is going to come down to who controls the tempo. But crazy enough, that one Old Dominion victory when allowing at least 70 points came against East Carolina. While the Pirates are a solid offensive team, they tend to lack on the defensive side of the ball.
That’s why I’ll take the Monarchs and the chalk.
The Pirates have been brutal on the road this season and their scoring troubles should continue against a great defensive squad like the Monarchs.
