The Furman Paladins look to extend their season when they face the Georgia Southern Eagles in the first round of the SoCon playoffs.
I think the question for Furman over the last month was whether they could avoid the conference basement. The answer turned out to be yes with a couple wins in the last two weeks getting the job done although next to last won't get you bragging rights. The Paladins were outscored 74-66 and often times were playing from behind for which they are not suited. Success in the postseason depends on not falling behind and that probably means scoring which is a struggle. Sort of odd because Stephen Croone (19 ppg) is one of the best offensive players in the conference but it's the supporting cast that hasn't helped.

The numbers say Georgia Southern scores and allows around 72 points per contest but in looking at their schedule the Eagles simply don't come close to reaching 72 points in defeats. Overall getting everything on the same page hasn't happened oftan enough and is why GSU was locked in a 7th place tie with a 6-10 mark. The key to success in the playoffs is to boost the scoring in to the 70 point range and let the chips fall where they fall. The Eagles do have a very nice one, two punch at the offensive end in Jelani Hewitt (20 ppg) and Tre Bussey (16 ppg) and if they get some scoring help Georgia Southern could steal a win or two.
Georgia Southern won both meetings with Furman and seem capable of a third but why do I feel uneasy? If you watched this conference you wouldn't need an explanation...
