The Winthrop Eagles and the High Point Panthers tangle in a Big South quarterfinal bout Friday.
High Point was the king of the regular season in the Big South with a 12-4 edging out second seed VMI by a game. The Panthers were arguably the hottest team over the final six weeks where they went 10-1 behind consistent play at both ends of the floor along with their ability to win the close one. Most of their wins were seven points less so a close game should not cause them much worry. Assuming the defense continues to perform the offense will flow through John Brown who averaged nearly 20 points and eight rebounds on 54.5% shooting.

Entering there postseason opener with Liberty, the queston for Winthrop was whether the team needed a big night on the scoreboard to prevail. That turned out to be a non issue with both ends of the floor coming up big in a 77-65 decision over the Flames to secure a spot in the quarterfinals. The Eagles won the shooting battle 46%-41% with a decisive 21-21 mark at the charity stripe to outscore the Flames by nine at the line. Keon Johnson led the scoring charge with 15 points with Joab Jerome, Andre Smith and Keon Moore netting 14 points each as the eight man rotation scored all but four points.
I have looked at the schedules of each team and although High Point has the better record in my mind I believe Winthrop can win this tournament. If I'm right then the Eagles are the right side...
