The St. John’s Red Storm visit the Marquette Golden Eagles to wrap up Big East play Saturday at noon on Fox Sports One.
St. John’s have had a week to rest up for this finale and are coming off a victory at home over DePaul to get back on track. The Red Storm rode their defense and a solid game from D’Angelo Harrison to get the 72-64 win. Harrison scored 25 points and pulled down 10 boards from the guard slot in the win. St. John’s shot over 50% from the floor and 40% from three and knocked down 19-29 at the line. The win moved the Johnnies to 9-8 in conference play and squarely in the mix for the 4 seed in the conference tournament.
Marquette lost a big opportunity to get in the 3 seed conversation with an 81-80 heartbreaking loss to Providence in 2OT. Todd Mayo exploded off the bench for 26 points and 11 boards with 3 assists. The Golden Eagles got just 11 points from Jamil Wilson and no other starters reached double figures but the bench combo of Devante Gardner and Deonte Burton combined for 25 points in reserve roles. Marquette ripped down 54 boards to dominate the battle on the glass and they forced 9 turnovers as well but were unable to slow down Providence’s starting five, who dominated the Golden Eagles starters.
Marquette is tough at home and these two teams are battling for seeding in conference play. The Golden Eagles have shown a tendency to perform well at home and to play better game to game -- I like Marquette at home to be the sole difference here as Todd Mayo and Jamil Wilson lead the Golden Eagles to the win and cover at home.
