The Fresno State Bulldogs and New Mexico Lobos will square off Thursday night in a MWC tournament quarterfinal. The Lobos won the only meeting this season back on January 18, 89-78.
The Bulldogs won their first tournament game on Wednesday with a 61-59 win over Air Force. Despite shooting just 33.3 percent from the field, they snagged 34 rebounds, forced 12 turnovers and took advantage of 28 free throw attempts. That’s Fresno State basketball, not always the prettiest, but tough play has resulted in nine wins in their last 11 games. On the season they average 71.5 points on 42.7 percent shooting and allow 72 points on 44.4 percent shooting. They are 17-12-1 ATS overall.

The Lobos will be playing their first game since blowing a 16-point lead to San Diego State for the regular season title. On the season, they’re averaging 74.5 points on 45.9 percent shooting and are allowing 66.3 points on 39 percent shooting. They’re led by three players who average more than 13 points, and they shoot 72.4 percent from the free throw line and 34 percent from beyond the arc as a team. Defensively, they haven’t allowed a team to score 60 points in six straight games. The Lobos are 15-11 ATS overall.
The Bulldogs are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 games, while the Lobos are 12-2 ATS in their last 14 games.
This is a true battle between two teams that have made us money all season, and it pains us to see one walk away from the tournament.
But the Lobos are just too talented on both sides of the ball for Fresno State, and they’re certainly going to play with a chip on their shoulder after the heartbreaking loss to the Aztecs.
They’re going to want that rematch, and it all starts with a win here.
Take New Mexico and the chalk.
