The Seton Hall Pirates square off against the top seeded Villanova Wildcats in quarterfinal action at the Big East tournament Thursday at noon on Fox Sports One.
Seton Hall advanced to quarterfinal play after holding on versus the fiesty Butler Bulldogs yesterday afternoon in first round action. The Hall led for most of the contest but needed a wide right half court shot by Butler to secure the win. Gene Teague was the difference as the big man dominated the paint throughout the game -- Teague finished with 14 points and 11 boards and made things very difficult for the Butler frontcourt in the paint defensively. Fuquan Edwin had 10 points and 3 steals but struggled to 4-13 from the field. The Pirates will need more production from Sterling Gibbs -- the guard once again saw less minutes and failed to score a point in the contest.

Villanova had a bye yesterday via their #1 seed and currently the Wildcats have not been challenged outside of Creighton in conference play. The Wildcats at 16-2 on the season in the big east and are led by a strong veteran core that features James Bell (14.9 ppg) and the recent hot hand, Darrun Hilliard (14.4 ppg). Villanova has steady point guard play and are strong on the defensive side of the ball as well. The Wildcats rank in the top 30 nationally in both points per game (79.0) and assists per game (15.8). Jayvaughn Pinkston and Ochefu both average just over 6 boards per game to lead the Wildcats as well. A deep run in the conference tourney may very well secure a #1 seed for Nova.
These two teams played two uneventful games this season with Villanova taking down two double digit, comfortable victories. I do not expect this contest to be any different -- Seton Hall is already thin and they are coming off a less than 24 hour lay off from a hard fought game. Look for Nova to wear them down as the game goes on and come away with the cover and win and move onto the semis on Friday.
