Iowa and Tennessee battle it out for a spot in the big dance.

The Iowa Hawkeyes and the Tennessee Volunteers face off on Wednesday in Dayton in a NCAA Basketball Tournament play in game.

The Iowa Hawkeyes looked to be a lock to make the NCAA Tournament and a reasonably high seed for most of the season but they lost six of their last seven games and find themselves in this matchup. Iowa is 11-2 in non-conference games and 3-2 in neutral site games this season. Roy Devyn Marble leads the Hawkeyes averaging 17.3 points per game. Aaron White is averaging 13 points and 6.7 rebounds, Mike Gesell is averaging 8.1 points, and Jarrod Uthoff is averaging 7.7 points. Iowa is averaging 82 points and they are shooting 46.5 percent while defensively they are allowing 70.1 points and their opponents are shooting 41.4 percent. Iowa clearly controlled their own destiny and let a big chance slip through their fingers.

The Tennessee Volunteers went on their normal late season run but came up short against Florida is the SEC Tournament and landed in this game. Tennessee is 9-4 in non-conference games and 3-2 in neutral site games. Jordan McRae leads the Vols averaging 18.6 points per game. Jarnell Stokes is averaging 14.7 points and 10.3 rebounds, Jeronne Maymon is averaging 10.1 points and 8.2 rebounds, and Josh Richardson is averaging 9.2 points. Tennessee is averaging 71.3 points and they are shooting 44.7 percent while defensively they are allowing 61.1 points and their opponents are shooting 40.8 percent. Tennessee’s loss to the Gators was the only game they trailed in since February.

Iowa is 16-5 against the spread in their last 21 non-conference games, 0-5 against the spread following a loss, and 0-7 against the spread in their last seven games. Tennessee is 6-2 against the spread following a loss, 5-2 against the spread in their last seven non-conference games, and 4-1 against the spread in their last five games.

I like the over here at 143.5 as neither team is going to go down easy. My stronger play is on who will cover the spread and I will post that pick in the Premium Area as well as on the App.

Mitch's Pick: Over 143.5
